How My Mirrors Are Made
Each mirror begins with wood, glass, and an idea for the colors and shapes that will bring it to life. I carve, paint, and assemble the frame by hand, taking time with the details that make each piece its own.
Carving the frame
I shape basswood into the scalloped pieces that surround the mirror, then build the frame and its borders.
Fitting the glass
The small openings vary slightly because they’re carved by hand. I cut glass panels to fit each one.
Painting in reverse
I paint flowers and colorful patterns on the backs of the glass panels. When the panels are turned over, the artwork shows through the glass.
Bringing it together
I smooth and finish the wood, fit the painted panels into the frame, and assemble the mirror. I give the back attention too, so the finished piece is ready to hang.
The shapes and painted details change from one mirror to the next. That’s part of what I love about making them: each one carries its own character and a little piece of me.

Painting the decorative panels
Fine brushes bring flowers, leaves, and vivid color to the small glass panels that will surround the mirror.

Shaping the raw frame
A rotary tool shapes and smooths the basswood, forming the scalloped pieces and carved borders by hand.

Refining the carved details
Each groove, notch, and edge is carefully refined so the frame’s repeating pattern feels balanced.

Testing the painted pieces
The finished reverse-painted panels are placed into their openings to check their fit, color, and rhythm.

Finishing the inner border
Painted glass and carved wood meet along the inner edge, where the small details are adjusted and finished.

Bringing the frame together
The colorful panels are fitted around the full frame, turning the individual pieces into one composition.

Smoothing and sealing the wood
The carved wood is smoothed and given its finish to protect the surface and bring out its warm tone.

Fitting the mirror and backing
The mirror, supports, and backing are measured and secured so the finished piece is stable and ready to hang.

Final assembly
The completed mirror receives its last careful adjustments and inspection before it leaves the workbench.
